GRE Exam Pattern

The GRE General Test is a focused assessment of your analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills, designed to prepare you for graduate-level programs. Since September 2023, the test duration is approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes. It includes one Analytical Writing task and two sections each of Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning with varying numbers of questions and time limits. This updated format eliminates unscored sections and breaks, ensuring a streamlined and efficient testing experience. Effective time management across these sections is key to performing your best.

GRE Exam Dates

GRE test-takers can attempt the test up to five times in a rolling 12-month period, with a minimum gap of 21 days between attempts. The GRE Subject Tests, offered three times a year, follow a separate fixed schedule.

GRE Scoring

The GRE General Test scores reflect your performance in three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. The Verbal and Quantitative sections are each scored on a scale of 130 to 170, while the Analytical Writing section is scored separately on a scale of 0 to 6. Your overall GRE score is the sum of Verbal and Quantitative scores, ranging from 260 to 340.
